I just stumbled across a documentary about Yousuf Karsh, a portrait photographer who focused on public figures. His family fled Armenia when he was 15 and he ended up in Canada, learning photography and gaining access to prominent figures during WWII. Karsh is best known for his photograph of Winston Churchill, glowering due to Karsh yanking the cigar from his lips.
