RAFW – Some Favourites!

Jayson Brunsdon – I love his choice of models, the 50’s cocktail hour clothes combined with the multitude of fresh faced blondes made his show like an army of January Jones clones (ohhh, the rhyming!) in her Mad Men wardrobe. So pretty, so feminine and so many colours of sorbet.

Dhini & Gail Sorronda – 2 labels that shared a timeslot. Dhini showed an adorable marching band inspired collection and Gail Sorronda showed a beautiful, delicate collection that was heavy on lace, tulle and feathers.

Kirrily Johnston – Okay, this collection is a lot like her collection last RAFW but she’s obviously onto something good because this collection is stunning. I love the gold jewellery and light, fluid layers.

RAFW – Bits & Pieces

I was so excited for RAFW, last year there were some seriously amazing shows that practically had me foaming at the mouth (Akira, Romance Was Born, Eastern Pearson) with all the gorgeous colours and patterns. This year is, dare I say, boring and recycled. I know there’s an economic downturn but is that really an excuse to stick to bland colours, sturdy shoes and Balmain rip offs?

Dree Hemingway

Dree Hemingway is a model currently signed with Elite, she has stellar lineage (her Great Grandfather is Ernest Hemingway & her mother is actress Muriel Hemingway) and she’s adorable to boot!
This video of her explaining her incredibly layered outfit is like a tutorial for rugging up, giant black fur over a little leather jacket and a cardigan, thick scarf wrapped around her neck, hiding behind her big black sunnies with a cup of coffee. Excellent.

Marc Jacobs + Louis Vuitton

A really wonderful documentary about Marc Jacobs and his job designing for Louis Vuitton as well as his own labels. Ahhh, it features a ton of pre-kilt Marc (utterly adorable and SO dandy!), the creation of my absolute favourite LV collection ever(S/S 2007), a hilariously long montage of Marc smoking, a hallway filled with shoes and some beautiful, beautiful clothes.

Movies & Music

Just had another exam and after it was done and dusted I decided to hunt down some of my favourite movie scenes that rely fairly heavily on music. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is a given, the final scene of Empire Records always pulls my heartstrings and the walking scene in Reservoir Dogs is excellent.

What are your favourites?

Ice Ice Baby

The September Issue is a documentary about the process of putting together Vogue America’s largest issue ever (hmmm, I wonder just how much of it was advertising?) and amazingly Anna Wintour’s icy stare didn’t freeze the camera parts. The release date is in September of this year, but you can see a clip from it here.

And speaking of ice…..A Surprisingly Cool History of Ice. It might be entirely useless information but my my it’s interesting!

Photo from here, the sculpture is part of a yearly snow and ice festival in China. I wish I lived somewhere with snow, and lots of it!

Way Back When (The Crusades)

A couple of seasons back Abaete did a collection that was heavy on the Crusaders crosses (the religious wars in the medieval ages and not to the soccer team) and knitted chain mail style balaclavas. I remember wondering just how strange it would be to wear chainmail, could a person get away with wearing a piece around the city? There’s more metal in some sets of braces, why should that amount of metal be confined solely to dental work?

Obviously the chainmail thing never really caught on but there were a few outfits and collections during the FW fashion weeks that featured a prettier version of that time period.

Super Heroes

I’ve been re-watching the first series of Heroes again over the past week and my love of the comic book style costuming has fluctuated to worrying levels. All I want to do is slick my hair back and wear a trench coat with the collar turned up. And maybe the ability to fly or read minds or persuade people to do my bidding would be nice, too. The amount of trench coats worn in that show must keep the entire trench coat industry afloat (assuming there is such a thing as a trench coat industry!).

Mostly I’m into the melodrama aspect of the costumes, the baddies wear big billowing black coats, the goodies are impossibly clean cut and the nerds always turn out to have the most extraordinary super powers. Other than being awesome at World of Warcraft.

Popular Penguins Return!

Popular Penguins are my idea of book heaven, $10 for popular & oft recommended titles that are slowly taking over my bookshelves. The first 50 titles must have been a runaway success because they’ve just announced the next 50 titles. And there are a lot of goodies! This round of Popular Penguins is fiction heavy and is rife with classics that I’m been meaning to read since I was about 12. They’re released on the 29th of June….can you tell how nerdishly excited I am?

The Age of Reason by Jean-Paul Satre - Set in the volatile Paris summer of 1938, The Age of Reason follows two days in the life of Mathieu Delarue, a philosophy teacher, and his circle in the cafes and bars of Montparnasse. Mathieu has so far managed to contain sex and personal freedom in conveniently separate compartments. But now he is in trouble, urgently trying to raise 4,000 francs to procure a safe abortion for his mistress, Marcelle. Beyond all this, filtering an uneasy light on his predicament, rises the distant threat of the coming of the Second World War.

The Haunted Hotel by Collins Wilke - Set in the volatile Paris summer of 1938, The Age of Reason follows two days in the life of Mathieu Delarue, a philosophy teacher, and his circle in the cafes and bars of Montparnasse.

Hell's Angels by Hunter S. Thompson - The Hell's Angels erupted into 1960s America, paralysing whole towns with fear. Determined to discover the truth behind the terrifying reputation of these marauding biker gangs, Hunter S. Thompson spent a year on the road with the Angels, documenting his hair-raising experiences with Charger Charley, Big Frank, Little Jesus and The Gimp. Hell's Angels was the result: a masterpiece of underground reportage whose free-wheeling, impressionistic style created the legend of Gonzo journalism, and made Thompson's name as the wild man of American writing.

The Plague by Albert Camus - The townspeople of Oran are in the grip of a deadly plague, which condemns its victims to a horrifying death. Fear, isolation and claustrophobia follow as they are forced into quarantine, each responding in their own way to the lethal bacillus: some resign themselves to fate, some seek blame and a few, like Dr Rieux, resist the terror. An immediate triumph when it was published in 1947, Camus's novel is a story of bravery and determination against the precariousness of human existence.
